About the event
The Decatur Area Audubon invites the greater Decatur Area to join us in the annual Christmas Bird Count. The count covers a 15-mile circle centered on Decatur and divided into quadrants. Community observers may go on their own or with a group of birders. Counting is permitted at feeders if they are within the designated territory.Â
This important annual community science project began in 1900 during the early days of conservation movement, to replace the previously established Christmas bird hunt. Today, the data collected by community observers across North America is used by the National Audubon Society researchers, conservation biologists, wildlife agencies, and others to study the long-term health and status of bird populations.
To participate in this year's count email Decatur Area Audubon President and Bird Count Co-Chair, Connie Requarth.
