Educational Opportunities and Resources
Audubon Adventures, Seasonal Naturalist and Grants
The Decatur Audubon Society offers educational opportunities and financial assistance to students and teachers in the Decatur and Macon County area. Our group funds Scholarships to Audubon Expedition Institute, Touch of Nature camps and Audubon Ecology Camps. We fund a large part of the cost of Audubon Adventures for local classrooms. We fund a naturalist's position at the Rock Springs Center for Environmental Discovery in order to make more field trips and other educational programming available at the Center.
Audubon Adventures
In this program children in grades 3 through 6 learn about the natural world through Audubon Adventures, a classroom program featuring a bimonthly children's newspaper and leader's guide. This unique classroom program brings a wonder and appreciation of nature to elementary school children.
We fund most of the cost of Audubon Adventures for use in local classrooms. Many Macon County teachers have found the Audubon Adventures materials to be an invaluable resource for their classes. Want Audubon Adventures materials for your Macon County, Illinois classroom? Email us at info@decatur-audubon.org and let us know.
Seasonal Naturalist
Decatur Audubon pays the salary of a part-time naturalist at Rock Springs Environmental Center. This person, the Audubon Seasonal Naturalist, leads discovery hikes and presents nature-oriented programs during the spring and fall for school and other youth groups.
Many city students get their first glimpse of the woods and the wonders of trees and wildlife during a hike led by Decatur Audubon's Seasonal Naturalist. Eyes and minds are opened.
Environmental Education Grants
Any K-12 central Illinois teacher is eligible to apply for Decatur Audubon's Environmental Education Grant. This grant of $500 to $1200 is for an environmental program, project or on-going activity. Please email us at info@decatur-audubon.org (or write us at the address below) if you would like more information on this grant. Deadline for applications is in early December. Grant recipients receive funds in time for spring semester projects. Recipient groups/classes display their projects/activities at the Festival of Spring held in April.
